Our biological microscopes, also known as high power compound microscopes, have transmitted halogen illumination with the light source under the stage. This provides good illumination for viewing biological microscope slides. For student applications, a prepared microscope slide set is recommended since the professionally prepared microscope slides have good coloration and provide clear microscopic imaging. For clinical applications, medical technicians take biological specimens and put them on blank microscope slides. Sometimes dyes are used to stain the live sample as it is often transparent under the normal brightfield light of a high power biological compound microscope. For high end medical and research applications, other microscopy methods of illumination may be used. The most common is phase contrast microscopy (PCM). This is where the microscope is fitted with a phase contrast kit containing special phase contrast objectives and phase contrast annulus rings in the light condenser. Other biological microscopes may be fitted with darkfield condensers and special lighting accessories to be used for live blood cell analysis using darkfield microscopy. The darkfield image illuminates the fine features in the live blood that is normally transparent using brightfield transmitted illumination.

Digital image capture is a frequent microscope need. We can interface the microscope with a computer via several different USB microscope cameras and normal digital cameras. Digital still and digital video images can be brought into a computer. We can also attach ccd video cameras for microscopic viewing on a cctv monitor. These are great for when a physician wants the patients to also view the image or for educational applications when a teacher wants all the students to simultaneously view the projected microscope image.
